Future Ocean Foods, a groundbreaking global seafood association, has been unveiled, boasting an impressive inaugural membership base comprising 36 companies from 14 countries, including the USA, Canada, the UK, and Singapore. Dedicated to supporting and accelerating the alternative seafood industry, members of Future Ocean Foods span plant-based, fermentation, and cultivated food and technology. United in their mission to promote food security, human health, environmental sustainability, and ocean conservation, the association is committed to fostering diversity and inclusion, with 40% of its members being women founders.
The alternative seafood industry, although relatively nascent, is experiencing rapid growth and is positioned to address key challenges related to the increasing global demand for protein. Future Ocean Foods members have garnered significant venture capital from leading food and climate investors, working collaboratively with established seafood companies to create sustainable food options. Recent advancements in taste, texture, nutrition, and pricing of seafood alternatives have contributed to the industry’s growth, with a 92% increase in invested capital from 2021 to 2022 and a 42% growth in US retail sales over a similar period.
Members of Future Ocean Foods are utilizing plants and cells to craft a diverse array of seafood alternatives, including whole-cut salmon filets, sushi-grade tuna, smoked salmon, flaky white fish, shrimp, crab, calamari, and more. This innovative industry moves beyond traditional alternatives, offering a variety of species and expanding the alternative protein industry’s scope.
Marissa Bronfman, Founder & Executive Director of Future Ocean Foods, emphasized the association’s significance in the current climate crisis and the peril faced by oceans. She stated, “Alternative seafood offers us the opportunity to build a more delicious, nutritious, sustainable, and ethical global food system,” expressing excitement about working alongside visionary founders and pioneering companies.
As the world grapples with the climate crisis and the potential collapse of global fisheries, Future Ocean Foods aims to play a crucial role in fostering knowledge-sharing, collaboration, and education. The association’s ambitious plan includes increasing product trials, deepening market penetration, raising nutritional profiles, and collaborating with traditional seafood companies for sustainable solutions. Future Ocean Foods also plans to host a grand global event uniting stakeholders from various sectors.
The association is proud to partner with leading organizations, including The Good Food Institute (GFI), ProVeg International, and the Global Organization for EPA & DHA Omega-3s (GOED), to transform the global food system and increase awareness of alternative proteins.
